Search and AI answers (SEO, AEO, GEO)

Last verified: 2026-10-20

FactStatus
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The SEO fundamentals still apply✅
To show as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet✅
Google: you don't need new machine-readable files, "AI text files," or special schema.org markup for AI features✅
Google's best-practice list includes allowing crawling in robots.txt, internal links, important content in text form, structured data that matches visible text, and an up-to-date Business Profile✅
AI Overview and AI Mode traffic is counted in Search Console's Performance report (Web search type)✅
Featured snippets: you can't mark a page as a featured snippet; Google's systems decide. Featured snippets can also appear in "People Also Ask"✅
ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (they can still appear as navigational links). GPTBot is a separate setting for model training. Changes take ~24 hours✅
Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to surface and link sites in its answers. It's "not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." Changes take up to 24 hours✅
Google-Extended controls whether Google-crawled content is used to train Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps. It "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal"✅
The terms SEO / AEO / GEO are industry shorthand, not Google or OpenAI terms. The course definitions: SEO = ranking in Google; AEO = being the direct answer (AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice); GEO = being cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini⚠️ industry terms
How voice assistants (Siri, Google, Alexa) pick spoken answers❓ not verified; the course doesn't make claims about it
